Cyclops, a photography book by Albert Watson, was well underway when I joined David Carson Design.
I was responsible for doing type treatments for many
of the spreads and coordinating the production of the book with the publisher.
The goal of my designs within this book were to appropriately choose and set type
that reflected the feel of the photographs. On the Apollo spread, I mixed two fonts - one
that was dignified, respectful, and thoughtful, with a more playful, round and adventurous font.
The result is a pleasant juxtaposition of what I imagined the astronauts felt as
they went through their mission in space.
The monkey spreads are so beautiful, repetitious, surprising, chaotic. I picked a font that
held many of the same characteristics for an appropriately bizarre result.
The production of this book was no small feat, with over 30 different homegrown fonts, over 170 pages, five
gatefolds and direction from David while he was in New Zealand. This experience taught me
the need to be organized, understand the deliverables, and the value of good relationships.
